What role should higher education play in combating inequality

The Spark, Southampton Solent University

After climate change, increasing economic inequality is the greatest challenge facing the western industrial societies. It was a major element in the Brexit vote and in the populist election campaigns of Bernie Sanders and Donald Trump.

With education recognised as one of the major contributors to personal success, it's important that higher education institutions provide open and inclusive environments for all.

Social justice has always been at the core of Solent’s mission, and we’re proud of the fact that 70% of our students are the first in their families to enter higher education. However, as the sector continues to evolve and external factors impact on our communities, the role of higher education will also change.

In this lecture Roger will explore a number of topics, including:

• What are the causes of this growth in inequality and what should we do about it?
• Where does higher education fit in?
• What role does higher education play in increasing or reducing inequality?

Places are limited, so be quick and book yours today. During the evening you will also have the opportunity to network with peers over light refreshments.
